A perfect day trip from Milan

Milan and the vineyards of Piedmont couldn't feel more different.

One is Italy's capital of fashion, business and design. The other is a region of vineyards, historic villages and family-run wineries, where food and wine have shaped everyday life for centuries.

That's one of the reasons so many of my guests choose to spend a day outside the city.

In just a couple of hours, the scenery changes completely, and you're surrounded by some of Italy's most beautiful wine landscapes.

Which wine region is the best choice from Milan?

The answer depends on how you'd like to spend your day.

If visiting Barolo and Barbaresco has always been on your bucket list, the Langhe is absolutely worth the two-hour drive. We'll simply start a little earlier to enjoy a relaxed full day among vineyards, wineries and beautiful villages before returning to Milan in the evening.

If you'd prefer to spend less time in the car, I often recommend Monferrato.

Only about an hour and twenty minutes from Milan, it's one of Piedmont's historic wine regions and offers a completely different perspective on the region.

Here you'll discover outstanding Barbera, Grignolino, Ruché, Freisa, Timorasso and many other indigenous grape varieties that are still produced on a relatively small scale.

Monferrato is also a wonderful destination for food lovers. Alongside winery visits, we can include experiences such as visiting traditional cheese-aging cellars, where local cheeses mature slowly before reaching the table.

Every region has its own character, and choosing the right one depends entirely on your interests.

Getting to Piedmont from Milan

Reaching Piedmont from Milan is easy, and I'll help you choose the option that best suits your trip.

If you're traveling by car, we'll simply meet at our first winery or another agreed location.

If you'd rather not drive, I can arrange private transportation directly from your hotel in Milan. Your driver will bring you comfortably to Piedmont, where I'll be waiting to begin your private wine tour.

If you're planning to visit the Langhe, I usually recommend arriving around 10:00 AM. That gives us plenty of time to enjoy the day at a relaxed pace before your driver takes you back to Milan in the evening.

If you choose Monferrato, the shorter journey gives us even more flexibility, allowing us to include additional experiences or spend more time visiting wineries and local producers.

Every wine tour I organize is completely private, so the day can be tailored to what you enjoy most.

You might prefer to focus entirely on wine, visiting two carefully selected wineries, enjoying a leisurely lunch and exploring one of Piedmont's beautiful villages.

Or we can combine wine with some of the region's other traditions.

Depending on the season, your day could include a private truffle hunt, a visit to a Nocciola Piemonte IGP producer, a tour of traditional cheese-aging cellars in Monferrato, or a private cooking class paired with local wines.
