Barolo 2022: Listening to a Vintage Before It Speaks

On December 6th, at the Enoteca Regionale del Barolo, L’Annata che Verrà gathered producers, institutions, and wine professionals just ahead of the official release of the 2022 Barolo vintage, scheduled for 2026.

Now in its second edition, the event offered a moment of collective reading — not only of data, but of context, experience, and interpretation.

A Climatic Outlier — But Not the Whole Story

From a climatic perspective, 2022 clearly moved far outside the historical norm.

Temperatures remained consistently above average.
Heat spikes exceeded 35 °C.
Rainfall deficits ranged between –40% and –60% across many communes.

On climatic maps, 2022 appears as a clear hot–dry outlier.

And yet, numbers alone never define a vintage.

What matters just as much is how those conditions were interpreted — in the vineyards and in the cellar.

A Selective Year, Not Simply a “Warm” One

One word returned frequently during the discussions: selective.

2022 was not merely a warm year.
It was a year that rewarded precision — cooler exposures, clay-rich soils, higher elevations, and attentive vineyard work.

Listening to producers such as Marcarini, Bric Cenciurio, Ettore Germano, Rocche Viberti, Bruna Grimaldi, Diego Mora, Le Strette, Bricco Maiolica, and Diego Conterno added a crucial human dimension to the reading of the vintage.

Their impressions and word associations spoke of a demanding season — but also of wines with clarity, balance, and expressive potential.

Communal Identity Preserved

Despite the climatic stress, one of the most remarkable aspects of Barolo 2022 is the preservation of communal identity.

Each area retained its own voice:

La Morra expressed lift and aromatic openness.
Castiglione Falletto showed structure and tension.
Monforte d’Alba delivered depth and gravitas.
Diano d’Alba leaned toward rounder, sweeter fruit profiles.

This differentiation is a rare achievement in such a hot year — and a strong sign of terroir resilience.

Texture, Balance, and International Readability

Aromatically, the wines often appear more compact, but not homogenised.
Tannins tend to be softer, textures rounder and more natural.

The overall profile suggests a vintage with strong international appeal — approachable, balanced, and refined — without losing its territorial anchor.

Wine as Language

One idea resonated clearly throughout the event: viticulture is not linear.

The producer is not a controller, but an interpreter.

Wine becomes a language — shaped by climate, place, and human choice — rather than a product of force or standardisation.

What to Expect from Barolo 2022

Barolo 2022 is not a uniform vintage.
It is deeply expressive.

Nuance over simplicity.
Place over power.

A vintage that asks to be understood — and rewards those who take the time to listen.
