Alba Barolo Truffle Hunting 2025–2026 | Authentic Experience in Langhe

Alba & Barolo Truffle Hunting 2025–2026

The magic of the Langhe woods

The Langhe are world-famous for Barolo and Barbaresco wines, but in autumn and winter the spotlight shifts from the vineyards to the forests.
Truffles have been prized since Roman times, when Alba—then Alba Pompeia—was a thriving town whose remains can still be visited today.

Between October 1 and January 31, the hills hide a treasure that nobles and chefs later elevated to gastronomic glory:
the white truffle of Alba (Tuber magnatum Pico). To join a truffle hunt here is to take part in a ritual that belongs to this land—
an adventure blending nature, tradition, and culinary delight.

A tradition with deep roots

The white truffle has long been linked to Alba, but it was in the late 1920s that hotelier-restaurateur Giacomo Morra
transformed a small local showcase into a true celebration, giving birth to what would become the International Alba White Truffle Fair.

Morra was a visionary. Decades before social media, he understood the power of storytelling and publicity:
every year he would send Alba’s finest truffles as gifts to world-famous figures—from Winston Churchill to Marilyn Monroe—
and invite celebrities to experience the Langhe. His bold gestures turned Alba’s white truffle into an international icon, synonymous with luxury and culture.

Every autumn, Alba becomes a vibrant stage: a truffle market in the medieval center, world auctions at Grinzane Cavour Castle, chef masterclasses,
wine tastings, and cultural events.

MUDET: the Truffle Museum of Alba

Since October 14, 2023, Alba has also been home to MUDET – The Truffle Museum of Alba,
ten immersive rooms dedicated to the biology, culture and craft of truffle hunting—a perfect stop before or after your woodland experience.

The adventure of truffle hunting

To step into the forest at dawn with a trifulau and his dog is to enter an old secret. The hush of the woods, damp leaves underfoot, the hunter’s stories—
and then that instant when the dog freezes, digs, and the ground releases its earthy perfume. It’s a treasure hunt for adults and children alike,
where every discovery is a shared triumph between human and dog. Many dogs are Lagotto Romagnolo, trained for years and bonded closely with their handler.

Two ways to experience it

  • Private or small-group truffle hunt — an intimate pace for couples, families, or friends.
  • Hunt + lunch — extend the day with a rustic meal featuring the fresh truffle you’ve just unearthed,
often in collaboration with the trifulau and paired with local wines.

The seasons of truffles

  • White truffle: October 1 – January 31 (peak aroma in November–December).
  • Black truffles: summer to early autumn; subtler, with the same thrill of the hunt.

Why it’s unforgettable

A truffle hunt in Alba and Barolo is not just an excursion. It’s a journey into culture and flavor across landscapes that form part of a
UNESCO World Heritage wine region. Many guests say that walking the woods with a truffle dog by their side becomes the highlight of their time in Piemonte.
